Course Overview: A three and a half day residential course aimed at providing a thorough grounding in areas that make up Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM).

Date: Sunday 10th June to Wednesday 13th June,2018

Venue: Lilleshall National Sports Centre, Shropshire

The course will cover aspects of both sports medicine and science in health, disease and following acute and chronic injury.

The course will be as practical/hands on as possible and lectures will include:

 Anatomy, pathologies and  practical examinations of  the foot, ankle, knee,  shoulder & spine
•  Exercise physiology
•  Nutrition in sport
•  Sport and doping
•  Practical rehab
•  Event Medicine

Idyllically situated in over 100 acres of gardens and grounds overlooking the beautiful Shropshire countryside, Lilleshall Hall was formerly the country retreat and hunting lodge for the Duke of Sutherland

It is currently home to the Lilleshall National Sports Centre and offers sports facilities and grounds which are still utilised by some of today’s top sportsmen and women from a variety of  fields and abilities.

Accommodation provided will be single occupancy and en-suite. 

Sports facilities available at the centre that can be used by delegates include, a Gym, Squash, Badminton, Table Tennis, basketball/netball, bowls, archery, astro-turf pitches and gymnastics facilities. There is no swimming pool on site.



Course Director and Lead Tutor:  Dr Jane Dunbar, Sports Medicine Specialist

Jane has taught on BASEM courses since about 1995 and also lectures at Stirling and Nottingham University. Jane is supported on the course by a faculty of co tutors who bring their own specialisms to the course. These include: Dr Dane Vishnubala, Dr Alethea Beck, Dr Chris Tomlinson, Physio Jazz Sohdi, Nutritionist Chris Curtis and Physiologist Richard Burden. 

Dr Jane Dunbar

Jane qualified in Medicine from St Andrews and Manchester Universities. Mixing GP training with expeditions and sailing before joining a GP practice in 1989. in Stirling area, Scotland. At this time she also started working in medical cover at Golf Tournaments locally at Gleneagles (Bells Open) and in sports medicine at the local Rugby Club. In 1995 she left full time family medicine for specialization in Sports Medicine, and has been privileged to have worked at 3 Commonwealth games  with Scotland and 3 Olympic games with team GB and treated patients from almost every sport.

Golf medicine experience includes golf event cover at 4-10 events (European tour or LET) every year since1993 as well as running local sports injury clinics and  consultaing at a private clinic  (Framework) in Bridge of Allan . Since 2010 she has also worked for the Men’s European Tour Golf as a Sports Medicine Consultant who shares care of all of the professional  players (all nationalities) with the medical director for the EuropeanTour.

At Stirling University she runs an NHS sports medicine clinic, lectures in sport and exercise medicine (and helps in the sports science labs).

She has a Diploma in Sports medicine since 1994 and is a Fellow of the Faculty of Sports Medicine (UK) and was the 4th person in the UK to gain specialist recognition in Sport and Exercise Medicine. 


Dr Chris Tomlinson

Chris  is currently Senior Sports Physician at the English Institute of Sport, where he has worked for the past 6 years, and Chief Medical Officer to British Gymnastics and Archery GB. He has worked in Professional Football since 2002 and currently works at Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club. He has an MSc in Sports and Exercise Medicine and a PGCert in Musculoskeletal Ultrasound.

Chris worked for 8 years at Shrewsbury Town Football Club, spent 6 years working with England Football teams at youth level, and has travelled with teams for British Athletics and the BOA.


Dr Alethea Beck


Dr Alethea Beck is a sports physician working with the ministry of defence as the lead doctor for the Regional Rehabilitation Unit for Scotland. This role focuses on the diagnosis, treatment and further rehabilitation of injured military personnel back to full fitness.

She is well known within the field of elite sport and has vast experience in travelling with teams. For 5 years she worked with the Scottish Rugby Union and travelled to New Zealand with the Men’s under 20’s squad in 2014 for the Junior World Championship before moving on last year to work with the Rugby Football Union as one of the medical team for the England Women’s Rugby Squad (current world champions) with whom she has toured Canada for the Super Series in 2015, Italy six nations 2016 and will tour the USA with them in the summer of 2016.

She currently acts as a Great Britain Diving squad doctor and will cover the World Series in 2016 to Beijing, Dubai, Canada and Russia.

She has a broad experience within the field of trauma sports medicine covering Scottish Motorcycling events and professional horseracing since 2010 where she later appointed as one of the youngest ever senior racecourse medical officers by the British Horseracing Authority. 

One of her specific interests is in the use of diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound in the sports medicine setting and she is currently undertaking a masters in this through Bournemouth University.


Christopher Curtis BSc (Hons), PGDip, MSc

Christopher is a Lecturer in Nutrition at St Mary’s University, Twickenham lecturing on both the undergraduate & postgraduate nutrition programmes. He obtained his undergraduate degree from Newcastle University before completing both his Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Nutrition through the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Masters in Sport & Exercise Science from Sheffield Hallam University and is a member of the Sport & Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr).

In addition to academia he currently works for the Rugby Football Union (RFU) within the elite women’s programme as a Performance Nutritionist having previously spent several years working as a practitioner within rugby union and football.


Richard Burden

Richard is the currently Acting Head of Physiology at the English Institute of Sport. He completed a master’s degree in applied sports science from St Mary’s University and a PhD from the University of Surrey, examining ‘The Influence of Iron Deficiency and Iron Repletion in the Endurance Athlete’. Richard continues to be active in research with a number of journal publications and conference presentations focusing on iron metabolism, haematology and biomarkers of training adaptation, recovery and the female athlete. Richard has provided physiological support to a number of Olympic and Paralympic endurance athletes and organisations including GB Rowing Team and the British Olympic Association's Intensive Rehabilitation Unit. Richard is also a Senior Lecturer of applied physiology at St Mary’s University and provides consultancy to Orreco who specialise in bioanalytics, working predominantly in professional sport in the United States, including organisations from the NBA, MLB and NHL.

Terms and Conditions of Booking and Refund Policy

  • Cancellation of your booking should be made in writing.  If notification of cancellation is given in writing any time between 133 – 91 days prior to the commencement of the BASEM Foundation Course, a 75% refund will be given.
  • If notification of cancellation is given in writing any time between 90 days and 30 days prior to the commencement of the BASEM Foundation Course, a 50% refund will be given.
  • If notification of cancellation is given in writing any time between 29 days to 8 days prior to the commencement of the BASEM Foundation Course, a 20% refund will be given.
  • If notification of cancellation is given with less than 7 days notice of the
    commencement of the BASEM Foundation Course, no refund will be possible.
  • Substitution of delegates can be made, providing notification in writing or by email, to arrive no later than 5 days prior to the commencement of the Course.  You must state the full name, address, contact telephone number of the substituted member at the time of notification of the substitution, if you are unable to attend yourself.

  • BASEM reserves the right to cancel the course due to insufficient enrolment numbers.  Such a decision will be made approximately one month before the scheduled course date.  Registrants will be notified by e-mail and a full refund of course fees will be provided.  Every effort will be made to avoid cancellations.
  • Adequate personal insurance should be taken out as BASEM cannot be responsible for travel and accommodation costs should the course be cancelled.
