The History of the Award

Malcolm Read was a member of the 1968 Olympic hockey team. He was a Medical Officer at the Commonwealth and Olympic Games between 1970 - 1988 and founded his own Sport and Exercise Medicine Clinic in 1971. He moved full-time into Sports and Exercise medicine in 1985 being a founding partner of Sport and Fitness Assessment Ltd, which became the BUPA Wellness Clinic in the Barbican.

Malcolm lectured internationally and taught and examined at the Royal London SEM course.

He has been a member of BASEM since 1971, being Chair of BASEM London and South East and the President of BASEM. He was President of UKADIS and published 11 papers and many articles whilst working alone in his clinic. Hence the Malcolm Read Scholarship is designed to assist individual SEM physicians working without wider funding and support to complete their research and publish.

Following the amalgamation of UKADIS with BASEM at the end of 2005, the former Board and Membership of UKADIS generously decided that left over UKADIS funds be invested in the form of an annual professional development scholarship.

In honour of Malcolm’s outstanding contribution to sport and exercise medicine, this annual scholarship has been established in his name.
