BASEM Invictus Games Senior Fellowship

The BASEM Invictus Senior Fellowship Sport and Exercise Medicine Bursary is available by application to members of BASEM who are on the specialist register for Sport and Exercise Medicine and with an interest in disability sport. The Fellow will report to and receive mentoring from the Chief Medical Officer, Professor Nick Webborn.

The Fellow will develop knowledge, skills and experience in aspects of adapted sport in injured veterans and will manage a team of multidisciplinary, experienced practitioners, culminating in the opportunity to work as Lead Doctor of the UK Team at a prestigious multisport, international event.

In addition to the Games Time experience, this individual will be responsible for leading on the design, development and implementation of the Medical Games education programme, ensuring the development of a robust Sports Medicine Strategy and supporting the operational build up and delivery of a nation medical team to the Games. The individual will receive reciprocal training, mentoring and support from the team’s Chief Medical Officer.

The monetary award is up to a maximum of £13,000 per annum towards post which will be approximately equivalent to one day per week.  The award will be paid monthly and will be dependent on meeting prior agreed milestones.

Application Criteria

1.     To apply for the award the applicant must be a member of BASEM

2.     The applicant should have specialist recognition in Sport and Exercise Medicine.

3.     The application should include:-

  • an introductory letter explaining previous experience and reasons for getting involved
  • a brief up-to-date curriculum vitae, including all necessary contact details (postal address, telephone number and email address).

3.     The attached application form must be completed and returned via email to amanda.harwood@basem.co.uk by the deadline date of 5.00 pm on 31st March 2018. 

Conditions of Award

1.     By applying for the award the recipient of the award agrees to maintain membership of BASEM for the duration of the award and for a minimum of 2 years following the last funding instalment.

2.     The recipient of the award agrees to submit regular updates regarding the progression of their research, in return for a regular instalment of the monetary award.  Milestones will be agreed between BASEM, H4H and the recipient at the start of the award.

3.     Should the recipient of the award not complete their agreed research milestone, BASEM reserves the right for reimbursement of monies already received.

4.     Any presentations, abstracts or publications made as a result of achieving this award should include an acknowledgement of BASEM.

5.     The recipient of the award will may be requested to present their experience at the BASEM Annual Conference.  Details of the recipient will also be announced on the BASEM website and in the BASEM Today.  The recipient will also be required to write a short article for BASEM Today on their role.

Judging of Applications 

The BASEM Awards sub-committee will review the applications supported by Help for Heroes and select the Award winner.  They may not make an award if the applications are not of an adequate standard.

Results Notification

Role Description

Invictus Games Lead Doctor: BASEM Senior Fellowship/ External

General Description:

Reporting: Chef de Mission/Chief Medical Officer

The Lead Doctor will be responsible for the provision of medical support in the lead up to and during the Games.

Pre-Games:

  • To support the ethos that all individuals engaging with Invictus Games have a positive experience
  • To attend the IG trials and lead the medical team at the event.
  •  To co-chair with the lead sport psych on all staff medical and sport science meetings at the trials helping to establish roles and responsibilities.
  • To co-ordinate medical staffing for all training camps up to the trials and then post trials tills Games time.
  • To co-create with CMO and LSP the job descriptions for physiotherapists and nurses.
  • To attend team development days and the 4 Recovery Roadshows in the build-up to the Games.
  • To organise and track all medical records using existing PPS.
  • In conjunction with CMO and LSP to make games times staffing decision post the trials for physiotherapists and nurses.
  • Post the IG2018 trials to created targeted support plans for identified individuals.
  • To best support the wider staff team to ensure the successful delivery of Invictus Games 2018 around areas such as jet lag, good health etc.
  • To support the production of effective resources to be delivered through Invictus.
  • To establish relationships with the Sydney IG Medical Team and establish clear incident management plans.
  • To lead the procurement of appropriate medical supplies (with Sport Officer in support).

Games Time:

  • Establish a strong working relationship with the rest of the UK delegation team.
  • To lead the medical team.
  • To be the medical lead for all incident/ crisis management
  • To ensure role clarity and role delivery across the medical team.
  • To lead all medical meetings and ensure appropriate dissemination.

Post Games:

  • To provide insights following the Games on the delivery of this role.
  • To lead on the medical component (under direction of CMO) of evaluating the IG18 processes and suggestions to best support the development of future cycles.
  • To input into wider project evaluation as required
  • Leading on Post Games Medical review including collation of feedback and appropriate report writing.
  • To be ultimately accountable for ensuring medical notes are appropriately and swiftly transferred to medical CoC and GPs (veterans) (with DCdMSp & Sport Officer in support)
  • To be accountable for the inventory and catalogue all returning medical equipment as appropriate
  • To complete the IG2018 staff feedback survey
