BASEM Invictus Games Fellowship for Allied Health Professionals

The BASEM Invictus Games Fellowship is awarded to enable an allied healthcare professional BASEM member to travel to support the UK Invictus Team at the Invictus Games (or equivalent if available).  The Fellow will report to and support the Lead Doctor.

The Fellow will develop knowledge, skills and experience in aspects of adapted sport in injured veterans and will work alongside a multidisciplinary team of experienced practitioners, culminating in the opportunity to work as part of the UK Team at a prestigious multisport, international event.

The monetary award, worth up to £7,000, will cover the travel, accreditation and accommodation costs of the Fellow but is an honorary position (no members of the UK Invictus Team are paid during the Games period).

Application Criteria

  1. The applicant must be a member of BASEM
  2. The applicant must be an HCPC registered physiotherapist or NMC registered nurse with an interest or experience in sport and exercise medicine and /or in military medicine.
  3. The application should include:-
  • An introductory letter explaining their previous experience and reasons for getting involved.
  • A brief up-to-date curriculum vitae, including all necessary contact details (postal address, telephone number and email address).
  1. The applicant will be expected to attend a number of the UK Invictus Team Training Camps and shown commitment to team working.
  2. Your application should be emailed to by 5.00 pm on 30th April 2018.

Conditions of Award

  1. By applying for the award, the recipient agrees to maintain membership of BASEM for at least 2 years post award.
  2. The recipient of the award will be confirmed by Help for Heroes to the BASEM Awards sub-committee as a suitable applicant.
  3. On notification of success the winner must confirm their availability to travel to the Games.
  4. On receipt of this confirmation, BASEM will advance the award to Help for Heroes.   Please note the Award money may not be used for any other purpose than that submitted in the application.
  5. The recipient of the award agrees to their success being announced in the BASEM Today and via the BASEM website.
  6. The recipient of the award will be expected to write a report on their experience for publication in BASEM Today and/or the BASEM website.
  7. BASEM requests that the Association be credited in regard to the completed research and for any future research/articles written as a result of receiving this monetary award.

Judging of Applications 

The BASEM Awards sub-committee will review the applications supported by Help for Heroes and select the Award winner.  They may not make an award if the applications are not of an adequate standard.

Results Notification

The applicants will receive notice of their success or otherwise up to 4 weeks after the closing date.

Invictus Games: Medical Practitioner Roles and Responsibilities

Invictus Games BASEM Fellowship: Games time role

General Description:

Reporting to: Lead Doctor, Lead Nurse and/or Lead Physio

The Medical Team will be responsible for IG Games time medical support and you will operate as part of the Sports Medicine team. Medical team members will be doctors, nurses or physiotherapists and final recruitment will be confirmed following team selection.

Pre Games:

  • To support the ethos that all individuals engaging with Invictus Games have a positive experience
  • To attend where possible requested training camps to provide clinical services
  • To attend key team development days and to engage and facilitate at 1 of the Recovery Roadshows in the build-up to the Games
  • To establish strong working relationships with the wider UK support staff team and medical team
  • To attend any medical staff training events as requested
  • To track any medical records using existing PPS EMR system
  • To assist the review of all competitor and staff information obtained on PPS as directed to by the Lead Doctor and disseminate any information to the wider sports medicine and science team as appropriate
  • To follow any lines of referral set out by the Lead Doctor during Games times, training camps and at trials
  • To best support the wider staff team to ensure the successful delivery of Invictus Games 2018 around areas such as jet lag, good health etc.
  • To support the Sport Officer and Lead Doctor on the purchasing of appropriate medical supplies if and when appropriate
  • To familiarise yourself with any host nation or UK Team medical information and plans

Games Time:

  • Establish a strong working relationship with the rest of the UK delegation team (with a focus on the medical and sport science team)
  • To provide medical expertise when required during Games time and/or training camps
  • To ensure all notes on medical incidents/treatments etc. at the Games are input to PPS in the correct format, in a timely manner
  • To provide support to any of the UK Delegation as required (rolling your sleeves up)
  • To provide insights following the Games on the delivery of this role
  • To feed thoughts into the Lead Doctor for an after-action report to help evaluate the IG18 processes and to best support the development future cycles
  • To support the Sport Officer to disseminate medical records from the Games to the appropriate channels upon return to the UK (e.g. patient’s GP or serving medical centre)
  • Support on keeping the medical kit inventory up-to-date
  • Liaise as required with host nation medical team at venues and accommodation

Post Games:

  • To provide insights following the Games on the delivery of this role.
  • To feed into an after-action report to help evaluate the IG18 processes and to best support the development of future cycles
  • To support on the Post Games Medical review including collation of feedback and appropriate report writing
  • To complete the IG2018 staff feedback survey
