Welcome to the March issue of the E-Circular – Days will soon be longer, Cheltenam Gold Cup is underway, the Champions League is upon us and the spring bulbs are showing through and there is an SEM Consultant post advertised here on this Circular! Changes to the licence to practice for doctors – see below. There is plenty on the SEM events calendar to be enthusiastic about this spring – including the upcoming Spring Conference, at Burleigh Court, Loughborough in April.

BASEM Spring Conference 2009 – Don’t miss this out on this popular event – Places are booking up fast!
The 2009 BASEM Spring Conference is a two-day event being held at Burleigh Court, Loughborough on Wednesday 29th April and Thursday 30th April, 2009. The conference includes a workshop on SEM and the Media, a BASEM/UK Sport workshop on ethics "Treat to cure, treat to play - or treat to please?" and a full day BASEM Spring meeting, "Hamstrung Again" focusing on hamstring injury, treatment, prevention and rehabilitation. SEM Consultant Vacancy!
University Hospitals, Leicester NHS Trust are seeking a Locum Consultant in Sport & Exercise Medicine. This post is offered initially for 6 months on a half-time basis, to facilitate the retirement of the senior Consultant and the evolution of the department of Sports Medicine at Leicester General Hospital.  For full details, please login to the BASEM Members’ area of the website to view the vacancy. CHANGES TO MEDICAL REGULATION WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF THE LICENCE TO PRACTISE IN AUTUMN 2009 FOR DOCTORS WITHIN THE UK

CALENDAR OF EVENTS:

BASEM Education Foundation Course 2009 – Lilleshall National Sports Centre, Shropshire
14 – 18 June 2009.
A four-day residential foundation course aimed at providing a thorough grounding in the areas that make up Sport and Exercise Medicine.

The course is multidisciplinary and is aimed at general practitioner s, hospital doctors, chartered physiotherapists and specialists in other areas of healthcare.

  • Specific lectures will include:
  • Anatomy, pathologies and practical examinations of the foot, ankle, knee and shoulder.
  • Sports Imaging, hands-on MS Ultrasound imaging
  • Exercise age and physiology
  • What to eat, when and why?

BASEM Annual Congress 2009 – 7th, 8th & 9th October 2009 at the Barcelo Carlton Hotel, North Bridge, Edinburgh, UK
Look out soon for full details and booking facilities for the forthcoming BASEM Annual Congress in October 2009.  We are inviting submissions for Abstracts for consideration of the BASEM Young Researcher Award, the Aircast DJO Basic Science & Clinical Science Awards 2009. NATIONAL EVENTS:

Concussion MasterClass hosted by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA)
Royal Society of Medicine , Chandos House, 2 Queen Anne Street, London W1G 9LQ

The BHA Concussion MasterClass is primarily for sports physicians and support staff who are actively involved in contact sports and have a working knowledge of the modern management of concussion.
Professor Paul McCrory (Melbourne) will moderate the 1 day meeting which will have presentations from the major GB professional sports with national concussion management programs - Rugby Union (Dr Simon Kemp), Rugby League (Dr Lisa Hodgson) and Horseracing (Dr James Murray and Dr Michael Turner)  The program will include a review of the Zurich, Prague and Vienna Consensus statements (following the publication of the Zurich Consensus Statement in May 2009) and registration will open at 8.45. The main meeting will start at 9.30 and be finished by 4.45.
The Registration Fee is £150 (to include a buffet lunch) and numbers are limited to 75 delegates.

Royal Ascot 2009
Delegates who attend the meeting will also have the opportunity to attend Royal Ascot on Saturday 20th June, featuring the £450,000 Golden Jubilee Stakes (Group 1), at an additional cost of £42 per ticket (maximum of 2 tickets per attendee). These are Grandstand tickets for a day that is normally sold out well in advance and numbers are once again limited. The Royal Procession is at around 2.00, racing starts at 2.30 and the last race is at 5.35 (6 races in total). RSM Conference - Dance Medicine ; the female athlete triad and hyper mobility  
One day conference - Royal Society of Medicine - 20th April , 2009

The programme aims to promote a multidisciplinary approach, with insights from both medical practitioners and dance artists. Those who should attend include medical practitioners and therapists working with dancers and athletes (or interested in doing so); medical practitioners working in related areas; and dance teachers, choreographers and dancers who wish to get the most out of their dancing bodies while minimising the risk of injury. ECOSEP 4th Sports Rehabilitation Course 15/16/17 May 2009
The European College of Sports medicine and Exercise Physicians organise the 4th Sports Rehabilitation Course. This course will be focused on the upper limps injuries in athletes, injuries diagnosis treatment and rehabilitation will be discussed.It will be held in Thessaloniki on 16-17th May 2009. EDUCATIONAL UPDATES:

The MSc Sport and Exercise Medicine course at University of Glasgow will now (Subject to Senate approval) also be offered on a Distance Learning basis from September 2009. The taught course, covering all areas of Sports Medicines and research methods, will be delivered on-line using multi-media program during semesters 1 and 2.   Students will view archived lecture material on line and take part as a class in an online tutorial once per week. They will also have a separate on line one to one meeting with their own e-mentor. Students will also be required to attend for a weeks residential course at Glasgow University. If you have yet to renew your subscriptions for 2009 - Save Money on This Year’s Fees!
Save yourself money when renewing your membership subscription for 2009 by opting to pay by Direct Debit. Anyone already paying or wishing to take up this method of payment will receive a discount on this year’s fees.  BASEM will waive the proposed 3.5% increase in fees next year if you choose to complete and return a Direct Debit form to the BASEM Central Office..  If you already have a direct debit set up with us, no need to worry.  To obtain a form, please email Katy Jones at basemcentral@basem.co.uk  We have had to increase in fees, in line with a 7% increase in our fixed costs for the BJSM.
