Welcome to May’s issue of the BASEM E-circular. A month in which England won the 2010 ICC World Twenty20 defeating Australia in the final by 7 wickets. Congratulations to the England cricket team and those equally important members of the team who support them, namely Dr Nick Peirce (Chief Medical Officer for the England Cricket Board), BASEM member and ex BASEM Secretary. This Newsletter brings you further success stories for BASEM members, as well as announcements requesting nominations/applications for the 2010 Sir Roger Bannister Award and the 2010 UKADIS Malcolm Read Scholarship in Sport and Exercise Medicine Award. Success for BASEM Members

Dr Ian Stuart Miller has the honour of being chosen by the American College of Sports Medicine to represent BASEM at their Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland, USA on 1st to the 5th June 2010. Stuart will give a lecture entitled “A Toolkit for Paralympic Sport Medical Care”.

Following the Congress held in Birmingham on The Growing Child in High Performance Sport which attracted some 150 delegates and run in conjunction with the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships, a recognition dinner was held. Of the 4 major awards that were made, 2 went to BASEM members, Dr John Aldridge and Professor Craig Sharp, who have both worked with BAGA since 1978. BASEM was happy to support this Congress.

Sir Roger Bannister has been elected honorary fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine.

2010 Sir Roger Bannister Award

The UKADIS Malcolm Read Scholarship in Sport and Exercise Medicine Award 2010

In honour of Malcolm’s outstanding contribution to Sport and Exercise Medicine, an annual scholarship has been established in his name. The award will provide financial assistance to support BASEM members who wish to undertake professional development of overseas centres of excellence. The idea is to reward work by a clinician, who, in the tradition of Malcolm Read, contributes to the practice of Sport and Exercise medicine by using practical/clinical experience to shape thinking within the field.

Applications are invited for the 2010 Award and details of the application criteria can be found here . Past winners of the award can be viewed by accessing the member’s area of the website.

The closing date for applications is 12 noon on Friday 29th October 2010.

Revise DipSEM
The Exam Preparation Course for the Intercollegiate Faculty of Sport & Exercise Medicine's (FSEM) Diploma in SEM
Dates: Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th September, 2010
Venue: Lilleshall National Sports Centre, Shropshire

BASEM plans to run this two day revision course covering parts 1 and 2 of the FSEM Diploma in SEM. The course will feature, focused lectures and tutorials on key topics; practical sessions covering joint examination, basic life support, advanced trauma life support and communication skills; practice written paper and OSCE; advice on exam technique and some pre course material including reading list, lecture notes and practice written questions. It will be possible to attend day 1 (part 1) and/or day 2(part 2) as required.

BASEM Clinical Skills Course 2010:
Dates: Sunday 5th to Thursday 9th September 2010
Venue: Bisham National Sports Centre, Buckinghamshire

This is a 4 day residential clinical skills course aimed at enhancing delegates’ skills in the assessment of musculoskeletal injury. The course is aimed at General Practitioners, GP Registrars and Specialist Registrars with an interest in sport and musculoskeletal medicine. The curriculum includes cervical spine, shoulder complex, elbow, wrist and hand, upper limb neurology, thoracic spine and chest, lumbar spine, pelvis, hip and groin, knee, ankle, foot, assessment of gait and use of imaging. UK SEM International Conference 2010

UKSEM 2010 is the official annual conference of the British Association of Sport & Exercise Medicine - BASEM - (in association with the Faculty of Sport & Exercise Medicine - FSEM).

The aim of the BASEM Education Management Group has been to provide a world class multidisciplinary meeting in conjunction with the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine UK, held annually, for professionals with and interest or working directly in sports medicine, sports science, physical activity promotion and conditioning and rehabilitation.

We have aimed to provide a world-class array of speakers from across the globe to challenge, provoke and inform a wide audience on topics across the spectrum of sport. We aim to become Europe's answer to the American and Australian Conferences and will be seeking partnerships with other organisation's in years to come. This year we are joined by the Defence Medical Services Rehabilitation Conference on the final day.

We hope you will be able to join us in London 2010 for a new era in Sports Medicine conferences in the UK. ExCel, London is at the Royal Victoria Docks in East London and provides extensive conference facilities for considerable numbers of delegates. LTA Sports Medicine Consultant (Fixed Term, Self-employed)

The Lawn Tennis Association is the National Governing Body for British tennis and is based at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) in Roehampton South West London. Forming part of the Player Support Team, the NTC Top Performance function operates an elite player development programme for top British players who are based at the National Tennis Centre.

We are looking to engage a Sports Medicine Consultant to work with the players at the NTC. The role will involve providing medical support to the top British players, working closely with the Chief Medical Advisor and working in an Interdisciplinary Player Support Team that includes Physiotherapists, coaches and sports science personnel. The role will be based at the National Tennis Centre and will be approximately for 12-16 hours per week. We are looking for a highly experienced sports physician within the field of elite sport, who possesses strong leadership skills and the ability to develop excellent relationships with coaches and players. The right person will build on the progress made in the last few years at the NTC with integrating Sports Medicine and Sports Science into Player Programmes in a practical and applied way. The right candidate will hold a post-graduate qualification in Sports Medicine and have fellowship of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine. They will have significant demonstrable experience working in an elite sporting environment.

The post holder will be self-employed and contracted to work for the LTA for a fixed term through a Provision of Services agreement.

BIMM Soft Tissue, Joint Examination and Injection Workshops
Dates and Venues: Sussex – 8th June 2010; Manchester – 6th September 2010

This is a one-day course comprising of a number of practical workshops. Delegates will be given a workbook covering the common musculoskeletal conditions affecting the upper and lower limbs prior to the workshop. The concept is "learning by doing" and participants will rotate around the workstations, learning surface anatomy, indications, needle placement and safety issues. This will be an accelerated learning programme for GPs to get equipped. There will be ample opportunity to practice examination and injection techniques using models. With a high tutor to delegate ratio (1:6), the course would be ideal for general practitioners, or hospital doctors beginning or considering a career in the field of musculoskeletal medicine.

9th Cambridge/UCLA Course – “Clinical Exercise Testing and Interpretation – A Practical Approach”
Dates: 29th and 30th July 2010
Venue: Cambridge University Clinical School, Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge

The aim of the course is to improve the participants’ knowledge of the value of exercise testing and interpreting the results in normals, and subjects with suspected pathology. The widely acclaimed textbook on exercise testing and interpretation written by two of the lecturers forms the knowledge base for the course and will be of interest to all involved in exercise testing as well as specialist registrars training in respiratory medicine, cardiology and rehabilitation.

FSEM Ireland, RCPI and RCSI Annual Scientific Conference 2010
Dates: 17th and 18th September 2010
Venue: Royal College of Surgeons, 123 St Stephen’s Green, Dublin, Ireland

The morning session on Friday 17th will focus on the Team Physician, with updates on the roles and responsibilities of the team physician, the psychological approach to the athlete, Anti-doping, supplements and hydration and medico-legal aspects.

The Friday afternoon session will have original research presentations and interesting case presentations, selected following a Call for Papers. This will be followed by a reception and Honorary Fellowship conferring ceremony, to which all delegates are invited.

The Saturday session will focus on Posterior Thigh Pain. We will attempt to reach a better understanding of this often difficult clinical area by having presentations on an overview of posterior thigh pain, medical assessment/treatment of acute hamstring tear, physiotherapy/strength and conditioning rehab of hamstring tear, lumbar spine biomechanics, Physio rehab of disc prolapse, imaging lumbar spine, injection therapy, and inflammatory conditions.
