Sports Science Research Ethics: Heroes or Villains

Date: 2012-05-22

The sixth seminar arranged by AREC’s University Sector Development Group

The field of sport and exercise science has burgeoned in recent years, and presents very specific issues for researchers and research supervisors. This seminar focuses on three key areas:

  • The increasing reliance upon sports volunteers raises critical ethical questions about recruitment, training, mentoring and retention that are yet to be fully explored by the sports science community. Whilst the beneficial effects of improved social cohesion and the accumulation of social capital have been heralded, little attention has been paid to the volunteers themselves. Richard Cheetham, Lecturer in Sports Coaching and Development, addresses these grass roots issues and the possible implications of over-regulation.

  • Extending the limits of human capacity in the interests of competitive sport raises questions about the boundaries of ethical research. Recent innovations in synthetic biology has caught the attention of anti-enhancement groups, but what is the basis and validity of their concerns and what does this mean for ethically grounded research in the sports science field? Dr. Iain Brassington, Lecture in Bioethics and Medical Law, addresses these issues and the implications for legal and regulatory instruments, research ethics committees, codes of scientific conduct, and public involvement.

  • Elite level sport is a technologically sophisticated business. Athletes are comprehensively monitored and recorded and various techniques from video to sensor-based measurement systems are used by coaches to enhance training, coaching and performance. However, there is a lack of clarity about ownership, access, disclosure and use of athletes’ data. In this paper, Scott Fleming, Professor of Sport and Leisure Studies addresses these themes and considers what contribution (if any) can be made by medical practice to resolving some of the difficulties.

JOIN US IN LISTENING TO OUR VERY EXPERIENCED SPEAKERS ON THE ABOVE AND IN TAKING FORWARD THE DISCUSSION BY CONTRIBUTING YOUR VIEWS. THIS IS AN EXCEPTIONAL OPPORTUNITY FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN SPORTS SCIENCE RESEARCH ETHICS TO CONSIDER AND DEBATE THESE TOPICAL ISSUES

Who Can Attend:

This is an essential course for sport and exercise Healthcare Professionals and Manual Therapists who are routinely expected to deal with medical and trauma emergencies despite having little or no formal grounding in these areas. Evidence continues to show how quickly these skills erode and how real-world variables can confuse the time-critical decision making process. This course allows the pitchside practitioner to re-evaluate their emergent skills and knowledge and discuss their own concerns and experiences amongst their peers. The certificate is accepted by all sport and therapy governing bodies for insurance and CPD purposes (6 hours).
