The BASEM Education Committee has made significant changes to the education programme. In short, we will no longer hold a Spring meeting and will instead focus on the annual congress.
With the approval of the Executive, we looked at all the relevant factors pertaining to BASEM Education. This included costs, time and organisation. However the most important factors by far were :-
As Sport and Exercise Medicine takes a higher national and international profile, there are many more meetings and conferences and it is increasingly difficult to run cost effective meetings in an atmosphere of increased competition and a (relatively) small number of potential delegates.
Throughout the world, the primary SEM conferences feature international speakers, ‘cutting edge’ topics and offer a broad profile of lectures/workshops. If BASEM is to be a leading organisation, as, indeed, we should be, we need to offer our annual conference to the world of SEM and also become a leader in SEM education.
Thus, the Spring meeting will no longer be held. The Spring meeting began as a continuation of the UKADIS Spring meeting after the merger of UKADIS and BASEM.
We are launching UK SEM and starting with UK SEM 2010, the BASEM conference incorporating all the previous features of BASEM Congress (BASEM AGM, BASEM open forum, the BASEM prizes and awards and of course the Sir Roger Bannister Medal)
The BASEM Executive Committee have endorsed this decision and we all hope that the membership will be pleased with the plans to move ‘onward and upward’, for an organisation that fails to do this will merely stagnate.
