I am delighted to inform BASEM members that the Intercollegiate Board (IABSEM) has now become The Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine (UK). The Faculty will be responsible for supervising the education and training of future specialists in Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM).
The Faculty’s President, Charles Galasko, has written to me with information detailing the application process for those wishing to become either Members or Fellows of our new Faculty. Membership and Fellowship maybe attained in one of 2 ways.
Through Training
In the future Membership will be offered to individuals who have completed basic specialist training and passed the diploma examination.
Fellowship will be offered to individuals:
who have satisfactorily completed higher specialist training, have a CCT in sport and exercise medicine and are on the Specialist Register
Individuals who are on the Specialist Register through article 14
EEA Specialists in Sport and Exercise Medicine who are on the Specialist Register.
By Election
This applies to those doctors who already have a postgraduate qualification in SEM and deliver SEM services.
Membership will be considered for those doctors who have completed the equivalent of basic specialist training and have a special interest in SEM (although this is not their principle specialty) who either hold the diploma or can demonstrate continuing CPD in SEM.
Fellowship will be considered for those who have made a significant contribution to SEM, even if they are not on the Specialist Register in SEM. Such individuals are likely to have had more than 10 years experience in SEM. The final date for Foundation Fellows and Members is to be 30th June 2007.
